Genesis 3:1-7 is a famous biblical scenario. Adapting it to modern life might look something like this…
Now the Crashed Computer (who looked like a serpent) was more subtle and crafty than any living computer of the computer field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the female computer, named Eve, which the Lord God had made,
“Can it really be that God has said, You shall not download from every website of the internet?”
And Eve said to the serpent-looking Crashed Computer,
“We may download from the internet, except from the website that is named ‘The Middle of the Garden of Websites’. God has said, You shall not download from it, neither shall you visit its homepage, lest you change your default settings.”
But the Crashed Computer said to Eve, “You shall not surely change your default settings! For God knows that in the day you download of it your internal memory and RAM will be so greatly enhanced and you will be like God, knowing the difference between good websites and evil websites and safe downloads and destructive downloads.”
And when Eve saw that the website called, “The Middle of the Garden of Websites” was good to read and that it was delightful to look at, and a website to be desired in order to make one as wise as God, she clicked on its dot-com address and downloaded all of its content as if eating hungrily of it; and she showed it also to her husband, Adam, and he downloaded all of its content.
Then they felt the change in their default settings take over and their eyes were opened to the dark side of the web, and they knew that they each had crashed.
While Adam and Eve thought they were becoming as wise as God, they didn’t realize that all they became was as wise as the serpent. They increased their knowledge of evil and calamity but the tree in the middle of the Garden of Eden couldn’t provide them with any more knowledge of good. Why? Because the serpent had no knowledge of good. The tree itself didn’t hold the knowledge of good or evil. It didn’t contain the knowledge of blessing or calamity. It only held the knowledge of the DIFFERENCE between the two.
When Adam and Eve ate from the tree at the serpents bidding they did an act that was outside of God’s approved Edenic activities. God wasn’t in any part of this and therefore could not and would not bless their actions. Just like then, every time we move out from depending on God as our source of life and try for life outside of Him, we end up like our computer characters above. We change our default settings from being powered up for life, health, strength, goodness, kindness, truth and love into the settings that automatically come up within us which are death, decay, weakness, evil intentions, mean-spiritedness, bullying, lies and hatred. This new default setting is very hard to change. Only God can change it back.
The problem is that we are all made from the crashed computer parts of Adam and Eve. Therefore, we are born right into this ugly default setting. From the moment of our first breath we have been powered up to desire the darker side of life and to shun what is good, life giving and healthy. We are powerless on our own to change this dark default setting we have been born into. This is all compounded by the fact that the Heavenly Father will not accept someone who (after reaching the age of accountability) still has the default settings of actions they’ve done outside of His perfect will. So, how do we get our default settings changed and, more importantly, how do we remove the overpowering side effects of what we’ve done outside of Him?
This is why we consciously struggle and resist the urges and desires for all the bad stuff and consciously choose, every day, the things that we know are good for us. We have to choose the things that will take us in the directions that will lead us to a right standing with God and, at the same time, cleanse us of the “bad downloads” and “internet virus” we cannot get rid of on our own.
Jesus came to this earth to change that default setting. He came to bring us the inner “oomph” that we need in order to resist not only the desires to follow after evil but to also gain His wisdom as God to know what truly is evil and what truly is good. And when He left this earth He sent the Holy Spirit to bring the life and wisdom of God to dwell within us.
The bible says, “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.” (Proverbs 14:12 NIV) And again it says…..
“Many plans are in a man’s mind, But it is the Lord’s purpose for him that will stand.” (Proverbs 19:21 AMP).
There are many plans we can make and there are many ways to go which appear right but if we do it without Gods wisdom and without Gods perfect will we will fail.
Jesus is always open and ready to change your default settings. He is knocking at the door of your heart asking you today, “Do you want Me to change back your default settings from death to Life?” Just ask Him, He will do it for you as He’s done that for me.
